BRODICK

The history of Brodick Football club is sketchy to say the least. There are no official records or anything like that, so we don't have a huge amount of information as yet. What we did manage to find we've posted here, however we hope that this site will encourage people who might know more to come forward and help fill in the gaps.

Brodick was founded ? and has been a main player of Arran football ever since, with the exception of brief periods of time. The basis of Brodick has often rested on the young and indeed the most successful teams have come from those which grew up playing football together from school years and onwards.

This practice has been continued with the average age of the current team being 20 years of age, however today many youngsters leave Arran for university, work opportunities or in recent years for the year out to Australia or worse playing for Lamlash!

Brodick play their games at Ormidale park which until 1997 was the first 3 holes of Brodick Golf club, however after many years of fund raising the land was purchased by the Arran Sports association and a fully fledged facility was able to be built.
This was not exclusive to football but gave Brodick a home that was safe from wayward golfers and still close to the Ormidale Pub.

Famous Player :- Ian "Smally" Small - played in at least 4 separate decades in goals and in the centre of defence. Legendary first touch could clear the length of the pitch.

Other Teams

Lamlash

Arch nemesis of Brodick. In recent times they have either not been able to field a team or have come under the guise of another name using a mix of both players from Lamlash and that from other villages.

Famous Player :- Bobby Sloss - Despite all the changes of personnel down through the years that has happened at Lamlash Sloss seems to continually be there. Famous for his whining at a certain referee.

Shiskine

For as long as has been known the same team has played every week with the odd exception of new blood from the Kinloch hotel and the odd player from other teams. This team must have more hotel staff who can get a Saturday night off for a game than anywhere in the world, rumoured to be in your contract if you can play football.

Famous Player :- Alan Johnstone - Time will tell this man to slow down one day but for now continues to plough down the flanks at pace. A hardy player who is never afraid to dish it out when required but will always let you buy him a pint after.

Southend

Primarily all from the Whiting Bay area - the old adage a team that drinks together wins together is adequate here. A solid base in recent years has seen Southend pick up trophies, again a well established and mature base of players with youth coming through.

Famous Player :- Jimmy "Ball Juggler" Morrison - The mustachioed one could teach his young protégé David a thing or two. A man who has done it all on the football pitch and a perfect example of the Southend ethos.

Southend Utd

A long journey was required whichever team played Southend (especially as the pitch was 3 miles off road). The team to blood young talent against and for Tony Morrow to play up front against. Would do the oppositions goal difference no harm. Disbanded early 90s. Southend have benefited with some good young farmers since joining them.

Famous Player :- Eddie Picken

Northend Utd

Set up by the folks of the villages of the North from Corrie onwards. A good lot of players however lacked numbers to back this up. Again disbanded early 90s.

Famous Player :- Nicol "skelf" Hume - Future manager of Brodick cut his skills plying his trade with Northend when unable to break into strong Brodick team.

Auld Arran (over 30's)

Formed 1990 and ran for exactly 10 years, appeared in 5 finals and lost all of them. Did however feature some prominent players including; Paul Clark (kilmarnock captain), Cameron Robertson (Ross County Captain), Rab Farmer (Raith Rovers Captain), Paul Arnold (ex-Chelsea) and also played against Brodick in the last game on the Old Ormidale Park Score; BRODICK 2 -AULD ARRAN 5. in which the combined age of Auld Arran's 4 midfield players was 168 years old!

Young Arran

Like the above except 20 yards quicker, set up by local young boys who believed they couldn't get a game for their own team, this team has since disbanded after 2 seasons 1999 and 2000 as the players have now gone on to indeed play for their local team.

Arran Select

The last game of each season sees the champions take on a team made up of the other villages playing each other for the Anne Miller Memorial cup.

The cup was established in memory of Anne by her family who died aged just 22 years.
The family are keen followers of Arran football and of Brodick FC.
Indeed her brother Alan played for Brodick at a time when they were sweeping all before them and is recognized as one of the best footballing talents Arran has ever produced.
